5 New Features for Microsoft PowerPoint 2013

By Sean Ditch

The next big thing from Microsoft is their Office 365 offering. Scheduled for release during Q1 of 2013, the familiar Office applications have been given the same sleek makeover as Windows 8; this means many new features have been added to improve user experience. Here is a look at 5 new features for PowerPoint 2013.

Theme Variants

A new version of PowerPoint naturally comes with new templates, and now you have more options to customize the design of your project. Theme Variants allows you to change a project color scheme and theme with a single click of the mouse, or a tap of the touch screen. This feature can be especially handy when designing a PowerPoint project around the colors of your company logo.

Slide Zoom

With the new Slide Zoom feature for PowerPoint 2013, you can toss out your laser pointer because this feature will do the highlighting for you. Take a typical slide with text boxes, charts, pictures, etc.; with Slide Zoom, you can zoom in on a selected section of your presentation with a single click or tap, and with a second click, the object returns to its original size. Slide Zoom will ensure the audience is focused on the section that you are talking about, and not reading ahead or being distracted by a picture.

Navigation Grid

Veterans of PowerPoint presentations are familiar with fielding questions at the end of a presentation, and having to hit the back arrow a dozen times to refer back to a slide somewhere in the middle of your presentation. Using the screen that only you can see, Navigation Grid lets you quickly pull up a specific slide from anywhere within your presentation. This feature will help you stay organized and retain the attention of your audience.

Simplified Sharing

PowerPoint 2013 saves your presentation to Microsoft's cloud computing service SkyDrive or SharePoint. Simplified Sharing not only increases the security of your document, but also makes it easy to share your work with others. This feature lets anyone with given permission, view and even edit the most current copy of the PowerPoint document. And if someone does not have PowerPoint, then you can send them a link and your presentation can be viewed in a browser.

Reply Comment

When the PowerPoint presentation is a group project, the Reply Comment feature makes communicating edits and ideas easier than ever before. With Reply Comment, multiple users can carry on a conversation about specific parts of the presentation in real-time. Reply Comment will even save comments and conversations, this will allow you to track the progress of the project and better meet the expectations of the group.
